To me, this is the sunflower in it's entirety. This forms part of a series of 2 and is done in the form of a botanical study, but with oil on clean white primed canvas. If the light catches the thick paint of the sunflowers and the leaves it throws shadows on the white primed canvas and I feel it contributes to the rawness of this painting and gives it a more three dimensional look.

I took these photos of these sunflowers while visiting Amsterdam with a dear friend.
