Sunflowers
The sunflower found me in a way ...
When I was exhibiting during my solo exhibition “A Vincent van Gogh 125 year Commemoration” in 2015 at the Attic in George and 2016 at Klein Karoo Klassique in Oudsthoorn, I always had fresh sunflowers at the exhibitions. These sunflowers inspired me to capture them on canvas and it is therefore that the sunflower found me…
At first, I saw the beauty of the sunflower in the bright yellows and contrasts of its face, but then it started to evolve. How it is held together, the magnificence of the colours and texture, and the parts no-one really looks at. Then the flower starts to let go, losing it leaves; decay sets in but seeds form for the next flower to bloom and prosper. For me, such natural architecture creates a sense of belonging. I aim to capture the colour, light and texture thereof using an impressionistic impasto technique, feeling the heaviness of the paint on my brush, which I mix on my canvas not knowing exactly how the paint colours will interact with one another.
